Piacenza Travel Guide

Piacenza is located in the north of Italy, in the Emilia-Romagna region. It is the capital city of the Piacenza province and has a population of over 100,000 people. The name of the city derives from the Lation placere, which means ‘to please.’ This shows that since ancient times, Piacenza has been known to be a wonderful tourist destination!

The city is located well geographically as it is situated at a major crossroads, intersecting roads that lead to Bologna, Milan, Brescia, Turin and Genoa; all of which have geographical (near the alps) or economic significance. As a result of its location, Piacenza holds great political significance in Northern Italy; it can either be the epicentre of culture during peacetime, or the focus of conflict during war.

This region still uses its own dialect, known as the Piacentino dialect, which is far removed from modern Italian. In recent years, the dialect has experienced as decline due to the standardisation of the modern Italian language in Education.

Although Piacenza isn’t as popular a tourist destination in Italy as perhaps Rome, Florence or Milan: the city is home to some hugely famous names. For instance Giorgio Armani was born in Piacenza, a hugely successful fashion designer who is known the world over.

In addition, this city has some hugely fascinating history, making it an epicentre for Italian culture as well as being significant in its geographical location!
